After a 28-year-old tradition of the Mazda MX-5, the Japanese carmaker has managed to stick to a simple formula, that, of course, is simplicity. And why not? It worked with the first-generation MX-5 in 1989 and continues to work even with the roadster in its fourth gen. Now Mazda has released a limited edition, MX-5, the RF (Retractable Fastback). The Mazda MX-5 continues to be the best-selling two-seater convertible sports car in history and by last year April, it sold over one million vehicles.
I had the chance to drive the Mazda MX-5 around the lovely Mother City for a few days and to describe it in one word – fun! On the inside, as expected, the MX-5 does not have much space. But then again, those who buy the MX-5 are not buying it for the storage space, now are they? It’s not all bad inside, with a small cabin, all the controls and buttons are within reaching distance and easy to locate and navigate. Back to the limited storage space, there is no glove box and limited areas to store anything, quite frankly – I even had a hard time finding space for my keys. Taller passengers might not have the best drive with little head-and-legroom.
There is a host of convenience features which include cruise control, climate control air conditioning, emergency stop signal, hill launch assist, premium leather seats and a 7-inch touchscreen display with Bluetooth connectivity. On the outside, the MX-5 is available in six colours (mostly metallic), from Soul Red Metallic to the introduction of a new colour option Machine Gray Metallic. Mazda has employed their KODO design philosophy in the MX-5.
The engine is noticeably torquey and loud, but who’s complaining? The steering is quick, responsive and playful – makes one wonder what this MX-5 will feel like around a racetrack as it provides a refined drive, almost like a larger-than-usual go-kart. The engine produces 118kW and 200Nm and reaches a top speed of 194km/h. Mazda puts the fuel consumption at 6.7l/100km.
For your safety convenience, Mazda has added Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), Advanced Electronic Braking and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM).
The Mazda MX-5 RF prices from R532 800 (incl. VAT).
