In the unique segment of large coupè-styled luxury vehicles, home to the likes of the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS, these two German GTs have new competition to keep their eye on. The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupè, a delightfully styled four door builds on the already handsome reputation of the 8 Series. It somehow manages to make the 8 Series look even better in this four-door configuration, especially from the rear.
In keeping with BMW’s new design language, it has strong character lines and large, bold surfaces. It retains the low roofline which blends sleekly into the rear silhouette and it is broad-shouldered, with powerfully sculpted wheel arches that accentuate its wide track.
It effectively replaces the 6 Series Gran Coupè and is currently the only vehicle with this type of body style in the BMW line up. Now offering a fifth seat in the rear, presumably for only short journeys, the Gran Coupè ups the practicality quotient thanks to a 201 mm longer wheelbase.
You can expect all of the latest toys that BMW has to offer in its high-end cars. Some highlights include soft-close doors, BMW’s driving assistant professional which includes steering and lane-control assistance, active side collision protection and BMW live cockpit professional with a fully digital instrument cluster and 10.2-inch infotainment display with the latest operating system, arguably the best in the business.
The lineup, for now, includes the six-cylinder 840i, diesel 840d and a V8-powered M850i. Schnell!
