The Lamborghini brand in South Africa has a new home and a new daddy. Home is Cape Town and daddy is Toby Venter, CEO of LSM Distributors. His name might ring a bell, that’s because he has exclusive distribution rights for Porsche in South Africa since 1994. Oh, he also famously bought Kyalami racetrack at auction in 2014. And LSM Distributors have been the sole rights holder of Bentley since 2016. It fits then that LSM Distributors acquires another marque from the Volkswagen Audi Group.
The Lamborghini Cape Town showroom is the first Corporate Identity Showroom in South Africa and falls under the Middle East and Africa, this showroom is one of twelve in the region, the first exhibiting the new corporate identity. Lamborghini have been quietly working away at performance car domination of late. Stefano Domenicali, him of very-senior-management position at Lamborghini in Sant‘ Agata Bolognese was present for the grand opening and the unveiling of the new Urus Super SUV in South Africa. He shared some interesting insights into Lamborghini world.
In 2017 they delivered 3 817 vehicles worldwide. The plant has been upgraded from 80 000m2 to 160 000m2, doubling space occupied and production capabilities. They now boast 150 dealers in 50 countries with the USA contributing 30% of the sales share. In a turn for the books Lamborghini buyers are becoming younger and younger with 70% of orders for the Urus SUV being first time Lamborghini owners.
That’s not a Sports Utility Vehicle either, it’s a Super Sports Utility Vehicle. Domenicali is firm that the Urus is not some generic SUV. It’s special, very special. The intention behind the Urus is about performance and then practicality. It’s for the Lamborghini driver who wants an everyday run around but doesn’t want to lose performance car dynamics. Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 478kW at 6 000 rpm and 850 Nm at 2 250 rpm we’d say it’s definitely not a plain ol’ SUV. Lamborghini assert this is the fastest SUV available with a claimed top speed of 305 km. Zero to one hundred is done in, a once again claimed, 3.6 seconds. Mind. Blown.
